Establishment of Eco-Friendly Energy Supply Facility Using Biomass to Replace Existing LNG
Full Operation Targeted for 2025... Annual Greenhouse Gas Reduction of About 44,000 Tons
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] CJ CheilJedang announced on the 10th that it will establish an eco-friendly energy supply facility at its production plant 'CJ Blossom Campus' located in Jincheon, Chungbuk.
This facility will carry out the process of converting wood fuel (biomass) into charcoal, and the steam energy generated during this process will be used to operate the CJ Blossom Campus.
The facility, scheduled to begin construction next year, will cover a total area of 39,600㎡ and is expected to produce 50 tons (t) of steam energy per hour. The steam energy will replace the existing fossil fuel LNG (liquefied natural gas). Notably, CJ Blossom Campus will be the first in Korea to apply 'Gasification' technology. This technology involves producing power and steam by burning wood gas generated through low-temperature pyrolysis.
CJ CheilJedang anticipates that once the facility is fully operational from 2025, greenhouse gas emissions from CJ Blossom Campus will be reduced by approximately 44,000 tons annually. This amount corresponds to about 10% of the greenhouse gas emissions from CJ CheilJedang's 17 domestic business sites last year.
To this end, on the 7th, CJ CheilJedang formed the 'ARK Consortium' with eight companies including Ark Holdings (project lead), Korea Forest Service Central Association (fuel supply), CJ Logistics Construction Division (overall construction), Yushin (design), Korea Plant Service (responsible operation), EG & Jihwan (technology supply), and SK Securities (investment), and signed a business agreement for the 'Forest Resource Circulation-type Green New Deal Energy Supply Project.' CJ CheilJedang will participate by leasing the project site within CJ Blossom Campus and purchasing steam energy from the ARK Consortium.
Kim Geun-young, Head of Food Production Support at CJ CheilJedang, said, “We are striving to use eco-friendly energy at all business sites nationwide, including CJ Blossom Campus,” adding, “We will take the lead in minimizing negative environmental impacts and enabling our society to sustain a sustainable life.”
