[Masters Insights] This Year's Total Prize Money is $15 Million... "Win and Hit a 3.3 Billion Won Jackpot" The Masters is expected to generate record-breaking revenue this year as a huge crowd gathers with the appearance of Tiger Woods. Augusta, USA = Getty Images / Multibitz

[Asia Economy Kim Hyun-jun, Golf Specialist Reporter] ○..."Total prize money of 15 million dollars (18.42 billion won)."

Augusta National Golf Club announced on the 10th (Korean time) that "this year, the total prize money is 15 million dollars with a winner's prize of 2.7 million dollars." This is a 30.4% increase compared to last year's 11.5 million dollars. The winner's prize also increased by 670,000 dollars from 2.07 million dollars. It is interesting that this amount is exactly 10,000 times the 1,500 dollars awarded to Horton Smith (USA), the inaugural champion in 1934. Unlike other tournaments that decide the total prize money in advance, the Masters finalizes it on the third day.

This is because there is no title sponsor. The funding is sufficient. Revenue from ticket sales, food and beverage, souvenirs, and TV broadcasting rights approaches up to 130 million dollars (159.64 billion won). Even after covering all expenses, 30 million dollars (36.84 billion won) remains. It is worth noting that the organizer's closed operation actually creates a 'blockbuster success.' This is the so-called 'mystique.' The prize money for the remaining three majors?the PGA Championship in May, the US Open in June, and The Open in July?which have not yet set their amounts, is also expected to rise significantly.
