[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] It is reported that the construction of the Yangsan residence where President Moon Jae-in will move in after his retirement in a month has almost been completed.

According to Yangsan City and Yonhap News on the 10th, President Moon's new residence located in Pyeongsan Village, Jisan-ri, Habuk-myeon, Yangsan-si, Gyeongnam Province, has recently had the construction barriers removed and construction waste hauled away, marking the near completion of the new building this month.

Essential works for daily living such as interior finishing, water, electricity, and gas (LPG) supply have been completed. It is known that recently repairs have been made to defects that occurred during construction. Just inside where the construction barriers were outside the residence, there is a low concrete wall. Various landscaping trees such as Korean azaleas, spiraea, and rhododendrons will be planted here to serve as a fence to conceal the residence and security facilities. The security building, which is one floor above ground and one floor underground, is progressing a bit slower than the residence. It is reported that the construction of both the residence and the security building will be completed by mid to late April at the latest. The presidential security office is in charge of guarding the Pyeongsan Village residence.

President Moon chose Pyeongsan Village as his retreat after retirement following criticism that his previous residence in Maegok-dong, Yangsan, where he lived before taking office, was in a remote location making security difficult. Last month, he sold the Maegok-dong residence building and rice paddies for about 2.6 billion won to cover the construction costs of the new residence in Pyeongsan Village.

The new residence in Pyeongsan Village is within walking distance of Tongdosa, one of Korea's three major temples and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. It is about a 50-minute drive to Bongha Village in Gimhae, where the late former President Roh Moo-hyun's tomb is located. It is also about 20 minutes away from Sky Park (Catholic cemetery), where President Moon's mother, Kang Han-ok, who passed away in October 2019, is buried.

Behind the village is Yeongchuksan (Yeongchuksan Mountain), 1,081 meters high, part of the so-called 'Yeongnam Alps' (high mountain areas over 1,000 meters spanning Miryang-si and Yangsan-si in Gyeongnam Province and Ulsan City).
