[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] It has been revealed that Lee Eunhae (31), the suspect in the so-called 'Gapyeong Valley Murder Case,' who killed her husband in the valley for insurance money, had a prior record of being detained as a minor.
On the 6th, Edaily reported that Lee was arrested and prosecuted in May 2009 on charges of special theft and theft when she was a teenager.
According to the report, from 2008 to early 2009, Lee lured men to motels in Incheon under the pretense of arranged meetings, then stole items while the men were washing and fled, committing the crime multiple times.
Some of the crimes were committed with friends, but the rest were reportedly committed alone. The value of the stolen goods by Lee through this method amounted to about 4 million won.
After being caught and detained at Incheon Detention Center, Lee submitted letters of reflection to the court three times before her first trial on May 1, 2009.
Lee was then transferred to the juvenile division on May 16 and reportedly received juvenile protection measures from the Incheon District Court in June of the same year. The records of the punishment have been destroyed, so it is not possible to confirm what penalties she received.
Juvenile protection measures are divided into 10 levels. Levels 8 to 10 are the most severe measures, involving transfer to a juvenile detention center: level 8 for up to 1 month, level 9 for up to 6 months, and level 10 for up to 2 years.
Meanwhile, Lee and her lover Jo Hyunsoo (30) are accused of killing Lee’s husband Yoon (39 at the time of death) on June 30, 2019, at Yongsogye Valley in Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi Province. The prosecution believes they forced Yoon, who could not swim at all, to dive and did not rescue him, resulting in his death.
Before the crime, in February 2019 at a pension in Yangyang-gun, Gangwon Province, they allegedly fed Yoon food mixed with pufferfish poison, and in May of the same year, they are also accused of attempting to kill Yoon by drowning him at a fishing spot in Yongin-si, Gyeonggi Province, but failed.
The prosecution concluded that Lee killed her husband aiming for the 800 million won life insurance policy taken out in his name. Five months after Yoon’s death, Lee filed a claim for the life insurance money with the insurance company but was rejected. The insurance company reportedly refused payment suspecting fraud.
Meanwhile, Lee and Jo were first summoned for prosecution investigation on December 13 last year but did not appear for the second investigation the next day and disappeared. After failing to locate them, the prosecution issued a public warrant on the 30th of last month.
