[Naju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Naju City, Jeollanam-do, announced on the 7th that it will provide a congratulatory payment of 500,000 KRW to new university freshmen, following last year.
The university admission congratulatory payment, first introduced by the city among local governments in the province, is a campaign pledge discovered during the 7th local government term to alleviate the economic burden of parents with new university students for the new semester and to foster local talent.
The congratulatory payment is 500,000 KRW per person and is paid in Naju Sarang Gift Certificates, a local currency, after an application period.
Previously, the city provided 240.5 million KRW in congratulatory payments to 481 new university students last year, greatly helping to reduce living expenses required for university admission.
The support target is new students who graduated from high schools within the city or passed the high school equivalency exam and entered university within three years.
As of January 1 of this year, at least one person among the new student themselves and their parents, spouse, or children listed on the family relation certificate must have been continuously registered as a resident in the city for more than one year.
Applications can be submitted in person by the applicant or a family member at the administrative welfare center of their address's eup, myeon, or dong from the 18th of this month to the 6th of next month.
Required documents include the application form, resident registration abstract, high school graduation certificate, and university enrollment certificate.
A city official said, "We congratulate the new university students taking their first step into a new environment," and added, "We hope the congratulatory payment will help with academic preparations."
