Naju Mayor Candidate Kang In-gyu: "I Will Stand Together Until the Naju Combined Heat and Power Plant Issue Is Resolved"

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Kang In-kyu, a candidate officially declaring his third-term run for mayor of Naju City in the June 1 local elections, has issued a statement expressing his intention to work together with citizens to find the best solution to the Naju Combined Heat and Power Plant issue and to obtain citizens' consent on the prepared measures.

In the statement, Candidate Kang also urged other mayoral candidates of Naju City to present their positions regarding the Combined Heat and Power Plant.

On the 6th, Kang In-kyu, a preliminary candidate for Naju mayor, held a meeting with the Joint Countermeasure Committee to Stop the Use of Waste Fuel (SRF) at the Naju Combined Heat and Power Plant, discussing the issues related to the plant and pledging to stand with the citizens until the problem is resolved.

Kang stated, “I have run around in every possible way to solve the Combined Heat and Power Plant issue, but the only response I received was that there is no legal defect,” adding, “To resist the unfairness where the central government's policy and the interests of public enterprises take precedence, and the convenience-oriented thinking of local governments, I had no choice but to resort to litigation as a last measure.”

He continued, “If we solve local issues solely by the yardstick of the law, the meaning of local governments ceases to exist, and if we only follow the central government's policies, there is no reason to elect a popularly elected mayor,” promising, “I will be a conscience that acts to solve the problem.”

To resolve the issue, he pledged, “I will gather wisdom together with the citizens to find the best solution, and I will definitely obtain the consent of the citizens on the prepared measures.”

Candidate Kang In-kyu once again quoted the late President Kim Dae-jung’s special speech on the 9th anniversary of the June 15 North-South Summit in his declaration of candidacy, affirming, “I will not evade because it is scary to act, because it is noisy, or because it causes loss,” while criticizing some local politicians who show passive attitudes or even blame the citizens.

Furthermore, Kang publicly asked other Naju mayoral candidates about their positions on the Naju Combined Heat and Power Plant, urging, “The election space should be a process of creating alternatives for Naju’s future through mutual discussion and competition in front of the citizens. If we can work together, we must unite our hearts and join the path of action.”

Currently, no Democratic Party candidate for Naju mayor has presented an official position regarding the Naju Combined Heat and Power Plant.

Following Candidate Kang In-kyu’s statement, attention is focused on what positions other candidates will take.
