[Asia Economy Reporter Kum Boryeong] President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol expressed his intention to "upgrade the cooperative relationship with Germany beyond the current level."
On the morning of the 6th, President-elect Yoon met with Michael Reiffenstuel, the Ambassador of Germany to Korea, at his office in Tongui-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, and made this statement.
President-elect Yoon said, "Germany is the number one country in trade with our country among the European Union (EU) member states," adding, "It has played a positive role and provided us with much support in the development of our economy, academia, and science and technology."
He continued, "Especially during the economic growth in the 1960s, various supports from Germany were a great help," emphasizing, "Due to cultural backgrounds, I believe the cooperative relationship with Germany will further develop in the future."
President-elect Yoon also expressed gratitude for the congratulatory message sent by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. He said, "Please convey my sincere thanks for congratulating me on my election." Ambassador Reiffenstuel responded, "I will deliver the message."
Ambassador Reiffenstuel also said, "On behalf of the German government, I congratulate the election of the President of the Republic of Korea. Not only the government but also the German people congratulate you," adding, "The people look forward to the development of bilateral relations under President-elect Yoon's cooperation, and also expect the development of relations not only with Germany but with the EU."
Before the meeting between President-elect Yoon and Ambassador Reiffenstuel, spokesperson Bae Hyunjin explained, "This is a meeting to seek and promise ways for President-elect Yoon to continue and develop the close cooperation between the two countries during his term," adding, "They will discuss responses to the North Korean nuclear issue, global concerns such as climate change, renewable energy issues, science and technology, and future industries, as well as bilateral cooperation."
