[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The National Human Rights Commission of Korea announced on the 6th that it will hold a "14th Anniversary Commemorative Forum on the Enforcement of the Act on the Prohibition of Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities" on the 8th, jointly with the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the Solidarity for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities.
The forum will review the current status of the enforcement of the "Act on the Prohibition of Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities." The Human Rights Commission plans to gather opinions from related institutions such as the Ministry of Justice and jointly explore future directions for legal amendments. The forum will be held in two parts. In the first part, Kim Seong-yeon, Secretary General of the Solidarity for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities, will present. Under the theme "Necessity and Measures for Amendments to the Act on the Prohibition of Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities," discussions will cover the expansion of the concept of disability and discriminatory acts, as well as ways to strengthen penalty provisions. In the second part, Im Seong-taek, former non-standing member of the Human Rights Commission, will present on the theme "Necessity and Measures to Strengthen the Role of the Disability Discrimination Correction Institution," discussing ways to enhance the effectiveness of corrective recommendations and corrective orders.
The forum will start in Seoul on the 8th and continue at the Gwangju Human Rights Office on the 13th, the Daejeon Human Rights Office on the 18th, and the Gangwon Human Rights Office on the 26th. At the Gwangju Human Rights Office, the theme will be "COVID-19 and the Human Rights of Persons with Disabilities," at the Daejeon Human Rights Office, "Current Status of Persons with Developmental Disabilities in the Daejeon Area and Establishment of an Effective Support System," and at the Gangwon Human Rights Office, "Measures to Promote Mobility Rights for Persons with Disabilities in the Gangwon Area."
