Seoul City Donates 71 Million Won in Employee Contributions to Support Wildfire Relief in Gyeongbuk and Gangwon Provinces

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government has entrusted Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association with donations to support recovery from the large-scale wildfires that occurred in March in the Gyeongbuk and Gangwon-do regions and to aid the disaster victims.

The donations, totaling approximately 71 million KRW, were raised over 11 days from the 15th to the 25th of last month through the voluntary participation of 5,119 Seoul city employees, including firefighters.

Seoul deployed 214 firefighters, 92 fire trucks, and 3 helicopters (a total of 7 flights) to the wildfire sites to support firefighting efforts. Additionally, the city promptly provided 40,000 bottles of Arisu water to disaster victims who had difficulty accessing drinking water, using an external cooperation fund of 400 million KRW.

The donations delivered to Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association will be used as restoration costs for residents of the Gyeongbuk and East Coast areas who suffered significant damage and distress due to the wildfires. Kim Sang-han, Director of Administration, stated, “These donations represent the heartfelt compassion of Seoul city employees who wish to share the pain of the wildfire-affected residents.” He added, “Seoul will continue to do its utmost to support the rapid recovery of the livelihoods and homes of the disaster victims.”
