[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The National Police Agency's National Investigation Headquarters announced on the 3rd that it will conduct an intensive crackdown on robbery, theft, and violent crimes for 100 days from the 4th to July 12.
For this crackdown, the police have organized dedicated investigation teams at each police station and strengthened the cooperation system among related functions and agencies. The police explained that they have established an organic and comprehensive response system covering the entire process of handling cases, from crime prevention to intelligence gathering, investigation, and victim protection.
The crackdown targets robbery, theft, and stolen goods offenders. For habitual offenders confirmed in robbery and theft cases, detention will be the principle, and investigations will be conducted strictly, including any additional crimes. Through thorough investigations such as tracing the disposal and distribution routes of stolen goods, the police will block connections with robbery and theft offenders and will also monitor precious metal handling businesses and secondhand trading sites regularly to recover stolen items.
Violent crimes targeted in this crackdown include violence occurring not only in everyday surroundings such as streets, shops, and public transportation but also at workplaces like offices and construction sites, as well as medical sites involving quarantine workers. In particular, crimes committed using weapons or under intoxication cause greater harm than ordinary crimes and have a high potential to escalate into heinous crimes. Therefore, considering the possibility of reoffending and retaliation comprehensively, the police will respond strictly with a zero-tolerance policy.
Cases with multiple victims or those that are serial or repetitive and pose high risks will be intensively directed by city and provincial police agencies, with dedicated investigation teams formed to swiftly apprehend suspects. Additionally, the police will utilize systems that encourage reporting and tips, such as the preparation of pseudonymous statements and reduced punishment for minor offenses, while providing safety measures for victims, including registration in the 112 system, issuance of smartwatches, and customized patrols.
A National Police Agency official urged, "Please trust our police investigation capabilities and actively report if you witness or know of any victimization around you."
