Dongdaemun-gu Launches Rainwater Drain Guardians Activities to Prepare for Summer Heavy Rain; Operates in Teams of Three Until October with Dedicated Staff at Bus Stops, Subway Stations, and High Foot Traffic Areas, Conducting Regular Inspections of Flood-Prone Zones
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) is launching full-scale rainwater drain guardian activities to prevent flood damage caused by heavy summer rains.
The rainwater drain guardians clean various trash such as cigarette butts discarded in rainwater drains to prevent flood damage and remove odors, providing residents with a pleasant living environment.
The rainwater drain guardians consist of a total of 28 members, divided into teams of three, and will operate from March to October. The district plans to thoroughly manage approximately 20,000 rainwater drains located throughout the area, including major roads and vulnerable alleyways.
Main activities include assessing the status of rainwater drains and checking for damage to sewage facilities, removing rainwater drain covers during the rainy season, managing and installing odor blockers in drains located in odor-prone areas, and conducting disinfection inside rainwater drains and manholes.
In particular, areas with high foot traffic such as bus stops and subway stations, where large amounts of trash are generated, will have dedicated personnel assigned for focused management. To prevent flood damage caused by heavy rain, periodic inspections of rainwater drains in residential areas vulnerable to flooding will be conducted.
For requests or inquiries related to rainwater drain cleaning and odors, please contact the Flood Control Division of Dongdaemun-gu Office.
Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol of Dongdaemun-gu stated, “In 2022, we actively operated the rainwater drain guardians to provide jobs for the elderly and create a safe and pleasant Dongdaemun-gu,” and added, “For more effective operation, we ask all residents to actively participate as rainwater drain guardians.”
