[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] A man in his 40s who was punished nine times for driving without a license was finally sentenced to prison after causing a drunk driving accident. The tenth punishment was a prison sentence.

The Ulsan District Court Criminal Division 2 (Judge Park Jeong-hong) announced on the 31st that it sentenced Mr. A, who was tried on charges of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (hit-and-run injury), and violations of the Road Traffic Act (failure to take measures after an accident, drunk driving, unlicensed driving), to 1 year and 6 months in prison.

According to the Ulsan District Court, Mr. A caused an accident last December while driving under the influence on a six-lane one-way road in Jung-gu, Ulsan, hitting a streetlight.

As a result of the accident, the rear-seat passenger lost consciousness, but Mr. A fled without providing first aid. The passenger sustained injuries requiring two weeks of medical treatment, and the damaged streetlight and traffic sign caused costs amounting to 4.9 million won.

Previously, Mr. A had caused an accident in 2016 and left the scene without taking measures. Before this accident, Mr. A had been punished nine times for unlicensed driving and was under probation at the time of the accident.

The court stated, "The defendant committed the crime during the probation period for unlicensed driving and other offenses, and fled after the accident to evade responsibility. Considering the repeated nature of the crime and the lack of victim compensation comprehensively..."
