[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Jinju City, Gyeongnam Province, announced on the 31st that it participated in the 'National Innovation City Council Joint Petition Signing Ceremony,' urging the prompt promotion of the second relocation of public institutions from the Seoul metropolitan area to innovation cities.
The signing ceremony was held online with the participation of heads of 11 cities and counties that are members of the National Innovation City Council, including Jinju City in Gyeongnam, Jincheon County and Eumseong County in Chungbuk, Jung-gu in Ulsan, Dong-gu in Daegu, Wonju City in Gangwon, Jeonju City and Wanju County in Jeonbuk, Naju City in Jeonnam, Gimcheon City in Gyeongbuk, and Seogwipo City in Jeju.
The adopted joint petition will be delivered to central government agencies such as the Presidential Transition Committee's Regional Balanced Development Task Force, the Balanced Development Committee, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The National Innovation City Council had already adopted a joint petition last August and has been promoting activities to urge the prompt implementation of the second relocation of public institutions from the Seoul metropolitan area. Through this petition signing ceremony, the council reiterated its call for the second relocation of public institutions.
Separately, Jinju City proposed the second relocation of public institutions from the Seoul metropolitan area to innovation cities through meetings with Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum in October last year and with officials from the Balanced Development Committee and the Ministry of Strategy and Finance in November.
A city official said, “Currently, innovation cities nationwide are incomplete, and for innovation cities to grow and settle as hubs of regional development, the second relocation of public institutions from the Seoul metropolitan area must be accompanied.” He added, “We hope that delivering the joint petition will be an opportunity for the government to breathe new life into existing innovation cities.”
