[Wando=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyung-pil] Jo In-ho, a member of the Wando County Council in Jeollanam-do, quickly inspected the kelp farms in the area that were damaged by strong winds and urged the executive branch to prepare follow-up measures.
From the 25th to the 26th, typhoon-level strong winds blowing at 25 meters per second caused significant damage, with all the kelp ready for harvest falling off the aquaculture facilities installed offshore in the Geumil area, the largest kelp farming site in the country.
The damage scale involves kelp growing on 12,240 lines installed by 120 households across 332 hectares of aquaculture farms, with the estimated damage amounting to 14.4 billion KRW.
The kelp spores were transplanted last November, and thinning was completed two to three times from February this year. The kelp was ready for harvest from early May, but the strong winds caused waves at sea, resulting in the sudden detachment of the kelp blades.
On the 29th, Councilor Jo personally visited the farms to inspect the damage and comfort the distressed fishermen. He strongly urged the accompanying executive officials to conduct a swift damage survey and prepare compensation measures.
He also met with the head of the Wando Geumil Fisheries Cooperative, the insurer, emphasizing the seriousness of the kelp farm damage and requested active cooperation to ensure realistic compensation.
Councilor Jo said, “I feel very sorry that fishermen, who have barely endured difficult conditions due to the decline in seafood consumption caused by COVID-19, are now facing natural disasters as well. I will do my best to ensure that compensation is made promptly.”
Fisherman Yoo (65) from Geumil-eup said, “I am truly grateful to Councilor Jo for his hands-on legislative activities, including visiting the damaged farms in person, confirming the situation on site, and comforting the distressed fishermen.”
Meanwhile, Geumil-eup is the largest kelp production area in the country, producing 1,936 tons last year alone, generating an income of 14.9 billion KRW.
