[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] A subcontractor worker at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering shipyard in Geoje-si, Gyeongnam, died after being hit by a falling object from a tower crane.
According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor, at around 1:40 p.m. on the 25th, a 53-year-old worker belonging to a subcontractor was hit by a wire and socket that fell from the upper part of the tower crane where maintenance work was underway. The worker was transported to the hospital but ultimately lost his life.
The Ministry explained that both Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and the subcontractor to which the deceased worker belonged are subject to the "Serious Accident Punishment Act" (applicable to workplaces with 50 or more employees).
Accordingly, the Ministry of Employment and Labor is investigating whether there was any violation of the Serious Accident Punishment Act and the Industrial Safety and Health Act.
