[Asia Economy Senior Reporter Jinsoo Lee] Research results suggesting that drinking two to three cups of coffee a day can extend lifespan by several years are set to be announced at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Conference, held from the 2nd to the 4th of next month (local time).

In the UK, a study has shown that consistently drinking one cup of coffee a day reduces the risk of suffering from heart disease or dying young by 15%.

Antioxidants in coffee beans are known to significantly help improve health by boosting metabolism, reducing swelling, and blocking fat accumulation in the body.

Decaffeinated coffee is also good for heart health. This applies even to people who like junk food or smokers.

Professor Peter Kisler of the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, said in a press release distributed in advance by the ACC, "Some people worry that coffee raises heart rate and might cause heart problems or worsen existing conditions," but advised, "However, do not hesitate to drink coffee daily; rather, consider coffee as part of a healthy diet."

Professor Kisler added, "Drinking coffee does not harm heart health; on the contrary, it helps."

The research team concluded that the greatest effects were seen in people who drink two to three cups of coffee a day. However, the group with the lowest risk of heart attack or stroke was found to be those who drink an average of one cup per day.

At this year’s ACC Conference, three papers related to coffee will be presented. These studies were conducted to determine whether coffee is safe for people suffering from heart disease.

Professor Kisler explained in the press release, "Even people with heart disease can safely drink coffee," adding, "Coffee is the most common brain function enhancer, with stimulating effects, clears the mind, and is a very important element in many people's daily lives."

The research results were obtained by tracking and analyzing the medical records of 382,000 people registered in the UK Biobank for up to 10 years. The UK Biobank is a project designed to collect genetic data from residents aged 40 to 69 living throughout the UK.
