Seoul City Conducts Spring Cleaning of Road Dust and Public Facilities... Deploys 484 Cleaning Vehicles

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 22nd that it will conduct a "Spring Cleaning" throughout the city by the 31st of this month. This cleaning campaign involves the Seoul city government, 25 autonomous districts, the Seoul Facilities Corporation, and citizens working together.

March is the month with the highest concentration of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) and the most frequent occurrence of "bad air quality days," with frequent atmospheric stagnation expected due to the influence of mobile high pressure. The city plans to clean the fine dust and pollutants accumulated on the roads to prepare for high concentrations of fine dust during spring.

First, from March to November, water cleaning will be carried out on main roads and general roads (1,946 km) as well as on intensive management roads (224.5 km) within the city. Roads that could not be water-cleaned during the winter due to freezing concerns will be thoroughly washed to remove calcium chloride and dust.

Additionally, from this month through November, the 25 autonomous districts will simultaneously conduct cleaning on the fourth Wednesday of every month, operating a "Seoul Clean Day." On the 23rd of this month, to welcome spring, all districts will carry out special cleaning including water cleaning of roads and sidewalks, voluntary cleaning in front of homes and stores, and surrounding environmental maintenance.

Furthermore, a "Special Cleaning of Public Facilities" will be promoted. Each public facility management department will clean various public facilities throughout the city while also conducting citizen awareness campaigns to refresh the city for spring. Cleaning will cover road-related facilities such as bridges, tunnels, soundproof walls, and central dividers, as well as commonly encountered public facilities like bus stop signs, subway ventilation shafts, and street trash bins.

Since the spread of COVID-19 has not easily subsided, activities of "Voluntary Cleaning Organizations," in which citizens participate autonomously, will strictly adhere to quarantine guidelines. Those interested in participating in this spring cleaning can receive cleaning supplies from their respective autonomous districts.

Oh Yong-seon, Director of the Living Environment Division, emphasized, "March is the period when fine dust concentration is highest throughout the year, so it is important to keep roads and living surroundings clean," and urged, "We hope citizens also clean in front of their homes and stores themselves to maintain a pleasant living environment."
