Four-Season Shopping, Installation of Rain Shelter and Sunshade Facilities
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Jinju City in Gyeongnam held a completion ceremony for the long-awaited ‘Daegwanmun Arcade Project’ at Jungang Market and Nongae Market, located in the old downtown area.
This year’s Daegwanmun Arcade Project was selected in the 2020-2021 traditional market facility modernization project competition, with a total project cost of 4 billion KRW invested to create a 184m-long, 2,221㎡-sized arcade.
To provide a pleasant environment in the traditional market, the arcade is equipped with rain protection and sunlight blocking facilities to enable year-round all-weather shopping.
Through this project, the city improved the shopping environment by reorganizing disorderly street vendors within the arcade section into modern-style stalls with distinctive features, while also securing emergency vehicle access and pedestrian safety.
A representative of the merchants’ association said, “The traditional market is a place of life and affection for ordinary people. We will do our best to welcome customers with merchant friendliness training and good products to make it a traditional market that people want to visit again.”
A city official said, “We hope the Daegwanmun Arcade Street will become a premium traditional market shopping street that Jinju citizens as well as external tourists want to visit with their families,” adding, “It is expected to contribute to revitalizing the old downtown market economy, which has been depressed due to COVID-19, by increasing customer inflow.”
Jinju City is currently promoting projects to revitalize traditional markets, including a research service for activating the Jungang Market commercial district, a CCTV maintenance project for the Jungang Market public parking lot, the expansion of the Nongae Market arcade, and the installation of public restrooms.
