[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Jeong-wan] A man in his 40s of Mongolian nationality, who assaulted his wife causing serious injuries in front of their 7-year-old son, was brought to trial and sentenced to a suspended prison term.

On the 21st, the Incheon District Court Criminal Division 17 (Judge Lee Joo-young) announced that A (40), who was indicted on charges of injury and child abuse under the Child Welfare Act, was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 2-year suspension.

The court also ordered A to undergo probation and attend 40 hours of child abuse recidivism prevention lectures.

Earlier, A was indicted for choking his wife B (40) unconscious and repeatedly assaulting her face at an apartment in Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, on December 7 last year. It was reported that A’s 7-year-old son witnessed the incident.

Investigations revealed that A committed the crime after his wife answered that she did not know where the cellphone was when he asked, "Where is the cellphone?"

As a result, B suffered fractures to her nose and eye bones, sustaining injuries requiring 8 weeks of medical treatment.

The court stated, "A assaulted his wife causing injury and emotionally abused her by making their child witness the act. Considering the degree of assault and the child’s age, this crime is likely to have a significant negative impact on the child’s development."

However, the court explained the sentencing rationale, saying, "The defendant admitted to all charges, and the victims do not wish for his punishment, which was taken into account in determining the sentence."
