[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The Asan Social Welfare Foundation (Chairman Chung Mong-joon) will hold the 15th Asan Medical Awards ceremony on the 21st at The Westin Chosun Seoul in Sogong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul.


In the basic medical science category, Professor Shin Eui-chul of KAIST Graduate School of Medical Science and Engineering, and in the clinical medicine category, Professor Lee Jung-min of Seoul National University College of Medicine's Department of Radiology each received the award along with a prize of 300 million KRW.


Professor Shin was recognized for his 20 years of research on immune responses to hepatitis viruses, providing directions for the treatment of viral infectious diseases. Professor Lee was highly evaluated for his world-class achievements in imaging diagnosis, prognosis prediction, and interventional procedures in gastrointestinal diseases.


Additionally, in the young medical scientist category awarded to medical scientists under the age of 40, Professor Kim Sung-yeon of Seoul National University College of Natural Sciences Department of Chemistry and Professor Seo Jong-hyun of Ulsan University College of Medicine Department of Radiology were selected and each awarded 50 million KRW. Professor Kim presented scientific principles of physiological needs and instinctive behaviors, while Professor Seo was recognized for his contributions to establishing proper clinical guidelines in the neuro-head and neck field.


The Asan Medical Awards were established in 2008 to encourage outstanding domestic and international medical scientists who have achieved remarkable accomplishments in basic and clinical medical fields. This year's ceremony will be held by inviting only the awardees and their spouses due to the spread of COVID-19.
