[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Shinsegae Food has partnered with GS Engineering & Construction to launch a food tech business aimed at popularizing eco-friendly salmon.

On the 21st, Shinsegae Food announced that on the 18th, it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with GS Engineering & Construction at GS E&C’s headquarters in Cheongjin-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, to mutually cooperate for the development and popularization of the domestic eco-friendly salmon farming industry.

Shinsegae Food plans to combine eco-friendly salmon farmed at GS E&C’s smart aquaculture facilities with its expertise across various business sectors, including food manufacturing, food ingredient distribution, dining out, and contract catering. In particular, based on the food tech capabilities of its global-level Food Safety Center and R&D Center, the company aims to develop eco-friendly salmon products and expand distribution and sales networks through manufacturing plants that directly produce various processed foods and a nationwide logistics network infrastructure.

GS Engineering & Construction will purify seawater used for salmon farming with its proprietary water treatment technology to use as aquaculture water, and the used aquaculture water will be filtered and reused to prevent ocean pollution, securing a stable partnership for the smart aquaculture business. When salmon are farmed using GS E&C’s smart aquaculture system, clean salmon can be produced that are not exposed to factors threatening the marine ecosystem?such as parasites, pathogens, heavy metal waste, and microplastics?that are obstacles in ocean salmon farming.

A Shinsegae Food official said, “We will achieve two goals?popularization and advancement?by introducing eco-friendly salmon based on the technologies of both companies to the domestic salmon market, which currently relies entirely on imports.” He added, “In the future, we plan to pursue various food tech-related businesses applied to seafood, targeting aquafarms and eco-friendly seafood commercialization, and aim to expand into both domestic and overseas markets.”
