[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kang Wooseok] Former National Assembly Deputy Speaker Shim Jae-cheol, affiliated with the People Power Party, held a press conference at the National Assembly and the Gyeonggi Provincial Council on the 17th to announce his candidacy for the 8th nationwide simultaneous local elections for Gyeonggi Province governor.

In his declaration of candidacy, former Deputy Speaker Shim stated, "With proven ability, experience, and a new vision, I will dedicate myself to Gyeonggi Province and create a new hopeful Gyeonggi that 13.5 million Gyeonggi residents can take pride in, together with the Yoon Suk-yeol administration."

He continued, "Gyeonggi Province has been called the metropolitan area, absorbing the overcrowded population of Seoul and alleviating its burden, driving South Korea's economic development. Thanks to Gyeonggi's sacrifice, South Korea has risen to the ranks of advanced countries, but ironically, the heart of South Korea, Gyeonggi Province, has stagnated," adding, "Gyeonggi Province must be reborn with new leadership for a new era. We must find Gyeonggi's identity, present a vision for Gyeonggi, and start anew with capable leaders who can dedicate themselves solely to the development of Gyeonggi."

Former Deputy Speaker Shim announced key pledges including ▲ early commencement of GTX construction ▲ early completion of the Metropolitan Area Second Ring Expressway ▲ 50% reduction in housing acquisition and registration taxes ▲ expansion of public postpartum care centers and national/public daycare centers ▲ construction of the Gyeonggi Dome stadium.

Meanwhile, Shim is the second People Power Party candidate to declare for the Gyeonggi governorship, following former National Assembly member Ham Jin-gyu on the 13th.
