[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] The Ulsan Office of Education is providing alternative learning support to prevent learning loss for students who are unable to attend school due to the impact of COVID-19 and other factors.
If a student is confirmed positive for COVID-19, attendance is suspended for 7 days regardless of vaccination status.
For students subject to attendance suspension, the homeroom teacher guides them on attendance processing and alternative learning methods during the suspension period, provides customized alternative learning, checks learning progress, and concurrently offers academic and psychological counseling.
In cases of self-quarantine at the class level or higher, remote classes are conducted.
Alternative learning is provided in various formats such as real-time interactive classes, online content provision, learning kits, assignment-based, and hybrid types, depending on the conditions of the school, grade, class, and student.
When students return to school, their learning history and level during the suspension period are assessed to provide supplementary learning and assignments to compensate for learning loss.
The city education office has produced monthly emergency learning kits for 1st and 2nd graders in elementary school, allowing schools to use them autonomously. A casebook of alternative learning will also be produced and distributed.
With secured budget, alternative learning support funds will be distributed to elementary schools that request funding.
Cheokgwa Elementary School uses a video class platform to allow students under attendance suspension to participate in all class hours in real time.
Oesol Elementary School provides various support for students under attendance suspension, such as distributing "Smart Home Stay" kits, tailored by each school.
Middle and high school students have their schools establish alternative learning operation plans to protect the learning rights of students under attendance suspension.
Customized alternative learning is provided according to subject content, including online content provision, assignments for home study, and real-time interactive classes.
Classroom scenes are broadcast in real time via electronic whiteboards so that students under attendance suspension can communicate remotely with teachers. Electronic whiteboards are planned to be installed in all middle and high schools this year.
After resuming attendance, students who wish can receive one-on-one face-to-face customized supplementary instruction by subject from teachers to compensate for learning loss due to attendance suspension.
Eonyang High School manages students under attendance suspension individually and provides students with a subject-specific alternative learning guidance website.
Alternative learning is guided on a weekly basis, and internet addresses for online classes and YouTube video materials usable by subject are also provided.
Specific learning content aligned with the learning progress is also presented to students.
An official from the Ulsan Office of Education said, “We are supporting not only learning but also checking students’ emotional and psychological states to help them adapt to school life after returning.”
