[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] Eight out of ten Americans support the United States accepting Ukrainian refugees. About half of the respondents viewed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions that triggered the war as comparable to Adolf Hitler, considering it appropriate.

According to Quinnipiac University on the 9th (local time), a survey conducted from the 4th to the 6th across the United States targeting 1,374 adults (margin of error ±2.6%p) yielded these results.

As the war has lasted more than two weeks and the number of refugees who have left Ukraine has exceeded 2.15 million, most Americans were positive about accepting them. 78% of respondents expressed support for the U.S. accepting Ukrainian refugees, while opposition was only 15%. Non-responses or uncertain answers accounted for about 7%.

Nearly 70% of Americans believed the war between Ukraine and Russia would continue for several months or more. When asked about the duration of the war, 44% expected it to last several months, and 23% thought it would continue for years. Only 19% responded that it would end within a few weeks. Additionally, 71% supported banning imports of Russian crude oil even if international oil prices rose further, while 22% opposed the measure.

Negative perceptions of Russia and President Putin, as well as support for the U.S. military response, advanced further compared to previous survey results. Nearly 79% supported U.S. military action if President Putin attacked NATO member countries beyond Ukraine, and 60% believed Putin appeared willing to use nuclear weapons against NATO countries.

Furthermore, 50% of respondents considered Putin’s invasion of Ukraine comparable to Adolf Hitler, the German dictator who caused World War II. Nearly 60% said Putin is mentally unstable, a deterioration in public opinion compared to the previous week’s 49%.

Opinions that the U.S. administration should impose stronger sanctions on Russia reached 56%, followed by moderate (30%), don’t know (11%), and excessive (3%).
