[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida strongly condemned Russia's attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant complex in Ukraine as an "absolutely unforgivable atrocity."

The Yomiuri Shimbun reported that during a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Prime Minister Kishida said, "As a country that experienced the Tokyo Electric Power Company's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident, I condemn this in the strongest terms."

He stated, "I am appalled and deeply angered. We can never accept Russia's atrocities," and urged that it is important to strongly demand the immediate cessation of combat activities, including shelling of the nuclear facility.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said, "If a nuclear accident occurs, it would have serious effects on a wide area including neighboring countries such as Russia," adding, "There has been no change detected by Japan's domestic radiation monitoring devices."

On the 4th, Russian forces shelled the nuclear power plant complex in Enerhodar, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Ukraine, causing a fire in a five-story training building located outside the complex's perimeter.

Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), stated that there was no release of radioactive materials from the attacked nuclear power plant.
