The Gyeongbuk Election Commission announced on the 2nd that it investigated two cases of violations of the Public Official Election Act and reported three people to the prosecution.
According to the Election Commission, the Yeongcheon City Election Commission reported Mr. A and Mr. B to the Daegu District Prosecutors' Office on the 2nd.
Mr. A, who lost his voting rights after being sentenced to a fine of over 1 million won for election crimes, and Mr. B, a current village chief, are accused of conducting election campaigning such as giving speeches at a specific party's campaign site from February 15 to 18, despite being prohibited from campaigning.
According to the Andong City Election Commission, Mr. C is accused of receiving 1,000 sets of pillows worth about 30 million won as a donation from a company operated by an acquaintance in December last year and providing them to organizations and village chiefs within his prospective electoral district.
The Andong City Election Commission is known to have reported Mr. C, a prospective candidate for the Andong City Council election, to the Andong branch of the Daegu District Prosecutors' Office on the 2nd.
Regarding public official elections, anyone can freely campaign; however, under Article 60 (Persons Prohibited from Election Campaigning) of the Public Official Election Act, campaigning is prohibited or restricted when specified.
Additionally, Article 113 (Restrictions on Donations by Candidates, etc.) of the same law stipulates that members of the National Assembly, local council members, heads of local governments, party representatives, candidates (including those intending to become candidates), and their spouses are prohibited from making donations (including officiating weddings) to individuals, organizations, or facilities within the relevant electoral district.
