Government Urges Immediate Cancellation of Japan Shimane Prefecture's Dokdo Day Event

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] The government strongly protested on the 22nd regarding the holding of the ‘Dokdo Day’ event in Shimane Prefecture, Japan, and the attendance of high-ranking central government officials.

Choi Young-sam, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated in a statement on the day, “We strongly protest Japan’s repeated futile provocations against Dokdo and solemnly urge the immediate abolition of this event.”

Spokesperson Choi said, “Dokdo is clearly our inherent territory historically, geographically, and under international law,” and added, “The Japanese government must immediately stop its unjustified groundless claims on Dokdo and humbly face history.”

Meanwhile, on the same day, the ‘Takeshima (the Japanese name for Dokdo) Day’ event was held in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, with Hiroo Kodera, Parliamentary Secretary (vice-ministerial level) of the Cabinet Office, in attendance.

The governor of Shimane Prefecture unilaterally incorporated Dokdo into its administrative district on February 22, 1905, and the Shimane Prefectural Assembly designated Takeshima Day in March 2005, marking the 100th anniversary of the announcement, and has held the event annually since the following year.

Accordingly, the Japanese government has dispatched high-ranking government officials for ten consecutive years from 2013 to this year.
