[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] Concerns over an invasion surrounding Ukraine are growing. Reports have emerged that 75% of Russia's main combat units have been concentrated near Ukraine.
On the 20th (local time), US CNN, citing US officials, reported that intelligence agencies have confirmed that 120 out of 160 Russian battalion tactical groups (BTG) are deployed within 60 km of Ukraine. This accounts for 75% of Russia's main combat units.
CNN reported that it is highly unusual for Russia to concentrate its military forces so intensively near Ukraine. Earlier, US President Joe Biden stated, "Russia could invade Ukraine within days," and added, "It seems that Russian President Vladimir Putin has made the decision to invade," which is analyzed as a judgment based on these circumstances.
Including pro-Russian Ukrainian rebels, the number of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border is estimated to be up to 190,000.
Additionally, US intelligence agencies have reportedly obtained information that Russian military commanders have been ordered to continue with the invasion of Ukraine. CBS's 'Face the Nation' reported that Russian forces are currently moving closer to the Ukrainian border and commanders are planning specific operations.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also stated in a CBS interview on the same day, "Everything we are seeing indicates that President Putin's decision to invade is progressing."
Meanwhile, President Biden convened the National Security Council (NSC) meeting on the same day following reports that Russia could attack Ukraine at any time.
