[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] As cases of Chinese nationals being lured in Cambodia for organ harvesting continue, Chinese authorities have issued a travel warning for Cambodia.
On the 18th, according to Chinese media such as Guancha Wang (觀察者網), Li Mo (31), a Chinese man who was kidnapped and held captive by a Cambodian internet scam organization and had his blood drawn, escaped and is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Li, originally from Jiangsu Province, China, went to Guangxi in June last year after a friend introduced him to a high-paying job. After drinking a beverage given by an unknown person, he lost consciousness and was kidnapped, passing through Vietnam before being taken to Sihanoukville, Cambodia.
Afterwards, Li was pressured by the kidnapping group to participate in internet scams but refused. In response, the kidnappers confined him and drew 1500ml of blood seven times starting from August last year, selling it each time.
Li escaped during a moment of lax surveillance and is currently hospitalized and receiving treatment with the help of the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia.
He stated, "The scam group threatened to harvest and sell my organs," adding, "One Chinese person who was with me had blood drawn and was subjected to organ harvesting, then disappeared the next day."
Previously in China, incidents similar to Li’s, where people seeking jobs suffered harm in Cambodia, have occurred repeatedly. Wang Mo, a Chinese woman in her 20s, also went missing after traveling to Cambodia in December 2020.
Wang’s mother received a Weixin (WeChat) message on the 14th, after losing contact since the 13th of last month, demanding 200,000 yuan (38 million KRW) with the claim that her daughter had been kidnapped. Two Chinese companions of Wang went missing and were later found dead, but Wang’s whereabouts remain unknown.
