[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, has pledged to definitely improve the comprehensive wage system.
On the 18th, Candidate Lee announced a 'Comprehensive Wage System Improvement Pledge' that includes strictly limiting the comprehensive wage system and thoroughly supervising labor conditions. This is his 73rd small but certain happiness (So-hwak-haeng) pledge, aimed at creating a fair labor environment where workers are justly compensated for the hours they work.
Candidate Lee criticized the comprehensive wage system, saying it "causes unpaid overtime and overwork," and expressed his intention to improve it. In particular, he mentioned that "the comprehensive wage system, which sets wages regardless of actual working hours, is like a free pass for youth."
He continued, "Jobs that were hard to obtain should not be exploited at will," and said, "We will create regulatory guidelines for comprehensive wage agreements to strictly limit them and thoroughly enforce labor supervision." He added, "While allowing a very limited number of exceptions where calculating actual working hours is difficult, even in those cases, explicit agreement or collective labor agreements will be mandatory," and emphasized, "We will definitely create a fair country where workers are justly compensated for the hours they work."
