Strengthen Vegan Beauty Lines One After Another
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] As consumer interest in health has increased due to COVID-19, the distribution industry is continuously introducing vegan products.
According to the industry on the 16th, GS25 has expanded its vegan products from 3 items in 2020 to over 20 items including ready meals, jelly, and milk. They introduced Vegi Garden’s vegan tteokbokki in two flavors: spicy and black bean sauce, and also started exclusive sales of the vegan carbonated drink ‘Famous Soda.’
Sales of vegan products increased 23.6 times in 2021 compared to the same period the previous year. CU has also expanded its vegan product lineup from 3 items in 2020 to over 20 items, broadening its base. The main product line is the ‘Vegetarian Series.’ CU gained popularity by being the first in the industry to use plant-based tuna made from soy protein in tuna mayo kimbap, yubu chobap, and triangular kimbap. Seven Eleven launched its own vegetarian specialty brand ‘Grain Great’ at the end of last December and is actively targeting the market.
The vegan trend is spreading beyond food to cosmetics. Olive Young introduced ‘Olive Young Vegan Beauty’ in line with the ‘meaning out’ trend, which adds personal beliefs and values to consumption. They gathered products certified vegan by reputable domestic and international organizations such as the Korea Vegan Certification Institute, the UK Vegan Society, and the French Vegan Society, selecting them as the Olive Young Vegan Beauty brand. Amorepacific launched the vegan cosmetics brand ‘Enough Project’ in June 2020 and has developed and sold its flagship product, the 24H Youth Ampoule. This ampoule received vegan product certification from the Korea Vegan Certification Institute and used 50% recycled PET made from discarded plastic. LG Household & Health Care, which entered the vegan market by launching the ‘belif X VDL Vegan Makeup’ line in August last year, released ‘The Face Shop The Therapy Vegan Line’ last month. This line contains non-animal ingredients such as edelweiss grown using organic farming methods in the Swiss Alps and excludes 24 ingredients including synthetic fragrances and methylparaben.
Aekyung Industrial’s clean skincare brand Efflow’s ‘Cica Ceramide Moisture Cream’ received vegan product certification from the Korea Vegan Certification Institute. This moisture cream is a dual-functional cosmetic effective for wrinkle improvement and whitening.
