88 Languages Recognition 'S Pen' Produces Clear Results Even with Rough Taps

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] "The most powerful model ever."

This is the evaluation of the smartphone ‘Galaxy S22 Ultra’ unveiled by Samsung Electronics on the 10th. The ‘S Pen’ delivers a writing experience as realistic as writing on paper, and the 108-megapixel ultra-high-resolution camera produces professional SLR camera-level shots even when taken casually. We had the chance to use the Galaxy S22 Ultra ahead of its release on the 25th.

S Pen That Even iPhone Users Admire

The ‘Galaxy S22 Ultra’ is the first in the S series to incorporate the S Pen, which represents the ‘Galaxy Note’ line. The ‘class’ difference between the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Ultra is most noticeable in the ‘S Pen.’ The existing S Pen latency was reduced from 9ms to 2.8ms, and AI-based handwriting prediction was introduced, allowing it to be used as if writing on real paper.

There were no errors when converting handwriting to text. The number of languages supported for handwriting-to-text conversion increased from 76 to 88. Additionally, hastily written shopping lists or simple notes can be easily digitized and neatly organized for easy reading. It was convenient to write long replies or enter long URLs in the address bar by handwriting instead of typing on the keyboard.

Even iPad users, after directly comparing Apple Pencil and the S Pen of the S22 Ultra, favored the S Pen for its smooth yet substantial ‘writing feel.’ The Samsung Notes app is a useful feature for users who frequently take notes.

A ‘Collaboration View’ was also added, allowing more efficient use by syncing ‘Samsung Notes’ across various devices. For example, after starting to draw in ‘Samsung Notes’ on the ‘Galaxy Tab S8,’ connecting the ‘Galaxy S22 Ultra’ to the tablet allows you to change drawing tool settings on the ‘Galaxy S22 Ultra.’

88 Languages Recognition 'S Pen' Produces Clear Results Even with Rough Taps This photo was taken at 7 a.m. in Jung-gu, Seoul, using Samsung Electronics' ambitious product, the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The image captures Namsan Seoul Tower through zooming in. The second photo is zoomed in 7 times, and the third photo is zoomed in 100 times.

Replacing Professional Cameras

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is equipped with a quad camera system including Samsung’s largest smartphone image sensor at 2.4μm size with a 108-megapixel ultra-high-resolution camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and two 10-megapixel telephoto cameras with optical 3x and 10x zoom respectively.

The biggest feature is ‘Nightography,’ which combines AI technology to vividly capture details of subjects even at night. Equipped with super clear glass, it eliminates flare?light reflections on the camera lens that cause ghosting on the screen. I took outdoor landscape photos at 7 a.m. Even before sunrise, it captured everything from nearby buildings to the distant Namsan Tower without missing a detail. Zooming in did not degrade image quality and remained clear. Using the macro function indoors to photograph flowers, the out-of-focus effect was at a professional camera level.

Video streaming has also become faster. The ‘Galaxy S22 Ultra’ supports Wi-Fi 6E, which is twice as fast as the previous Wi-Fi 6. It also features UWB (Ultra-Wideband) technology, allowing easy file sharing between devices. Additionally, the ‘Vision Booster’ technology enabled clear screen visibility even outdoors.

Inheriting Classic Design

The design is similar to the previous Note series but with added sophistication. The metal frame around the circular camera housing on the back also caught the eye. The ‘Galaxy S22 Ultra’ features a nearly bezel-less design. It also boasts strong durability. For the first time in the S series, it uses Armor Aluminium, the strongest aluminum ever used in smartphones. The ‘Contour Cut,’ which wraps from the side to the rear cameras as one continuous piece, was also noticeable.

This series uses Samsung Exynos 2200 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 manufactured with a 4nm (nanometer, one billionth of a meter) process. The AI processing performance of the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) has doubled compared to the previous model. It supports 45W super-fast charging, allowing over 50 minutes of video recording after about 10 minutes of charging. The unexpectedly heavy weight is the only downside of the ‘S22 Ultra.’ Comparing the Galaxy S22 Plus (195g) and Ultra (228g) by holding both simultaneously, the difference was clear. The improved performance with the same price as the S21 is also one of the buying points of the Galaxy S22 series.
