[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] The People Power Party has decided to strategically nominate a candidate for the Seoul Jongno district in the upcoming National Assembly by-election to be held on March 9. In Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, a single candidate will be recommended, while in Seocho-gap, Seoul, and Cheongju Sangdang, Chungbuk Province, primary election candidates will be fielded.
The People Power Party's Nomination Management Committee held its 4th meeting on the afternoon of the 7th and made this decision.
According to the committee's decision, Jongno-gu in Seoul was selected as a "priority recommendation area" for strategic nomination. The candidate for nomination will be discussed later.
Anseong City in Gyeonggi Province will recommend former lawmaker Kim Hak-yong, who served as a member of the 18th to 20th National Assembly, as the single candidate.
The primary election districts were decided as Seocho-gap in Seoul and Sangdang in Cheongju, Chungbuk. In Seocho-gap, five candidates will run: former lawmaker Lee Hye-hoon, former 1st Deputy Director of the National Intelligence Service Jeon Ok-hyun, former People Power Party Seocho-gap district chairman Jeon Hee-kyung, People Power Party Supreme Council member Jung Mi-kyung, and former Seocho District Mayor Jo Eun-hee. In Seocho-gap, if no candidate receives a majority of votes, a runoff primary will be held between the top two candidates.
In Cheongju Sangdang, three candidates will run: lawyer Kim Ki-yoon, former Daegu High Prosecutors' Office Chief Prosecutor Yoon Gap-geun, and former lawmaker Jung Woo-taek.
The primary election will be held on the 10th, with the final vote percentage calculated by combining 50% party member elector votes and 50% public opinion polls.
