Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry Special Lecture
"Growth through Employment Flexibility
Sustainability through Expansion of Social Safety Nets"
[Asia Economy Reporters Hyunju Lee, Hyunji Kwon] Yoon Seok-yeol, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, argued on the 7th that "even if the annual average of 52 working hours per week is maintained, flexibility should be applied depending on the type of work."
On the same day, during a special lecture for presidential candidates hosted by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Candidate Yoon said, "Even if the same weekly hours are maintained on an annual average basis, it is absolutely necessary to make it much more flexible depending on the type of work and the form of employment."
He explained, "In large corporations, labor substitution is possible, but in startups or small companies, it is difficult to substitute manpower by averaging times when work surges and when it is somewhat less, so it is even more necessary for smaller companies."
Regarding the polarization issue, he said, "Focusing too much on welfare distribution often hinders growth," adding, "I felt the need to make corporate activity freedom and employment security more flexible for growth, and the concept that came out in response to that is the social safety net." He continued, "The social safety net itself is basically a structure that needs to be created because it makes employment more flexible," and added, "Expanding the social safety net is a system that supports sustainable growth, so a virtuous cycle must be achieved."
Candidate Yoon, who supports the nuclear power industry, emphasized, "Without nuclear power plants, it is difficult to meet industrial demand, so we must strengthen the safety of nuclear power plants and prevent them from becoming NIMBY targets," and added, "Significant economic compensation should be provided to regions that allow nuclear waste disposal sites to be established."
