Dining Out Prices in Crisis... Pizza Joins Chicken and Burgers in Rising Costs
Major Companies Like Domino and Mister Pizza Also Responding
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] As dining-out prices continue to soar since the beginning of the year, pizza prices are also rising following chicken and hamburgers.
According to the franchise industry on the 7th, Pizza Alvolo raised pizza prices by an average of 5-6% starting from the 3rd of this month. This means an increase of 1,500 to 2,000 KRW per pizza.
One of the popular menu items, the "Kkum-eul Pizza," saw its regular size price rise from 24,000 KRW to 25,500 KRW, and the large size from 28,000 KRW to 29,500 KRW.
Also, the "Nalgae Pizza," one of the artisan pizzas, increased from 26,000 KRW to 27,500 KRW for the regular size, and from 31,000 KRW to 32,500 KRW for the large size.
This price increase by Pizza Alvolo comes about 10 months after raising some items such as traditional pizzas and well-being pizzas by 1,000 KRW per pizza in April last year.
A Pizza Alvolo representative explained, "Due to rising prices of agricultural, livestock, and marine raw materials, increased labor costs, and a shortage of delivery personnel, we were inevitably forced to raise prices."
Price hikes in the pizza industry are also continuing among mid- to low-priced franchises. Pizza School raised prices of 28 types of pizzas by 1,000 KRW each in November last year and increased the price of cucumber pickles from 400 KRW to 500 KRW. Pizza Maru raised product prices by 1,000 KRW starting from the 24th of last month. With this increase, the prices of Italian Cheese Pizza, Pepperoni Pizza, and Combination Pizza rose to 7,900 KRW, 8,900 KRW, and 9,900 KRW respectively.
Accordingly, large franchises such as Domino Pizza and Mr. Pizza are also expected to join the price hikes. In the case of Mr. Pizza, the headquarters has not raised pizza product prices, but some franchise locations have increased buffet prices or added a delivery fee for delivery orders at their discretion.
An industry insider said, "The recent price increases in agricultural, livestock, and marine products, as well as labor and logistics costs, have already accumulated, and we are receiving many requests from franchise owners," adding, "However, since consumer complaints about delivery fee increases are accumulating and it is a time when maintaining good customer relations is necessary, the situation is delicate."
