[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Kim Jong-un, General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, sent a congratulatory message to Xi Jinping, President of China, on the occasion of the opening of the Beijing Olympics on the 4th, expressing his support.
According to the Korean Central News Agency, General Secretary Kim stated in the congratulatory message, "On behalf of the Workers' Party of Korea, the Government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and the Korean people, I warmly congratulate the 24th Winter Olympic Games being held in Beijing."
General Secretary Kim emphasized that the Beijing Olympics is "a grand event that the Communist Party of China and the people of China are welcoming for the first time in the first year of a new 100-year journey to realize the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," and described it as "a joint celebration of all the peoples and athletes of the world who aspire to peace, friendship, and unity."
In particular, regarding the opening of the Beijing Olympics amid the COVID-19 crisis, he praised it as "another great victory achieved by socialist China," and said, "The Olympic flame burning in Beijing clearly confirms that no obstacle or challenge can block the path of the Chinese people, who are firmly united around General Secretary Xi Jinping and boldly advancing under the leadership of the Communist Party of China."
He also highlighted the friendship between North Korea and China. General Secretary Kim said, "In the struggle to safeguard and advance our common cause, the DPRK-China relationship has been solidified as an invincible strategic relationship that cannot be broken by anything," and added, "The two parties and the peoples of the two countries are strengthening unity and cooperation in politics, economy, culture, sports, and various other fields."
He further stated, "I will continue to firmly join hands with General Secretary Xi and elevate the relations between the two parties and two countries to a new higher stage in accordance with the aspirations of the peoples of the two countries." Previously, North Korea officially announced its non-participation in the Beijing Winter Olympics.
