[Asia Economy Reporter Hyungsoo Park] Renewable energy company Soul Energy announced on the 2nd that it has published the winter issue of the climate crisis response magazine '1.5℃'. The theme of the winter issue is the 'electric vehicle,' which is gaining attention as an eco-friendly means of transportation.
Published quarterly, '1.5℃' is a climate crisis response magazine that raises awareness about the severity of climate change caused by environmental issues and encourages participation in actions to save the Earth. Since the inaugural issue in November last year, it has covered climate crisis issues through themes expressed in people, artworks, spaces, and valuable ideas.
The winter issue presented various content to provoke thoughts about electric vehicles. A company representative explained, "According to the American Public Health Association, air pollution caused by vehicles has been found to cause respiratory diseases and premature death."
They added, "Since the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement, efforts by various countries to phase out internal combustion engine vehicles have achieved remarkable results," and "With the rapid increase in electric vehicle sales, electric vehicles have become not a choice for the future but a necessity."
Soul Energy focused on the fact that the electricity powering electric vehicles is not as eco-friendly as expected. As of 2020, Korea's power generation capacity by energy source is 35.6% coal, 29.0% nuclear, and 26.4% gas. Electricity produced from fossil fuels, the main culprit of global warming, accounts for a whopping 62.0% of the total.
A company representative stated, "We wanted to raise the issue of whether a car powered by electricity generated from non-eco-friendly energy sources can be considered eco-friendly just because it is an electric vehicle," emphasizing, "Unless the method of electricity production itself changes, electric vehicles can never be an eco-friendly means of transportation."
Jiyoung Ahn, CEO of Soul Energy, said, "'1.5℃' aims to be a platform where the government, companies, and everyone together seek breakthroughs for the climate crisis and contemplate the future of the Earth," adding, "As a renewable energy company, this is our essential direction and social mission."
