[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Japan has reached an all-time high.
According to major foreign media on the 2nd, the number of new confirmed cases across Japan was 94,930, breaking the previous record set just four days ago on the 29th of last month. This number is about 170 times higher compared to a month ago.
For the first time, Tokyo exceeded 20,000 cases, and among the 47 prefectures, 18 reported record-high numbers of confirmed cases.
Due to the highly contagious Omicron variant, the absolute number of confirmed cases has increased, leading to a rise in deaths and severe cases as well.
On this day, the number of deaths reported nationwide was 80, 10 more than the previous day. The number of severe cases requiring ventilator treatment increased by 82 in one day, reaching 886.
Clusters (groups of infections) have also increased. The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reported that as of the 31st of last month, there were 1,122 cluster occurrences over the past week.
