[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Kwon Eun-hee, floor leader and close aide to Ahn Cheol-soo, the presidential candidate of the People’s Party, called the unification of opposition candidates on the 2nd a "betrayal of the people." This indicates that Ahn’s intention is leaning more toward completing the presidential race rather than unifying the candidates.
Kwon, who serves as the Chairperson of the People’s Communication Committee in Ahn Cheol-soo’s presidential campaign, appeared on Gwangju KBS Radio that day and responded to the host’s question, "Is your position still that there will be no unification of opposition candidates, just like a month ago?" by saying, "Yes. There still is none."
He said, "Previously, Candidate Ahn responded to the public and supporters’ desire for regime change by accepting that will, attempting unification and making concessions. But what was the result?" He asked rhetorically, "Wasn’t it just a simple power change rather than regime change, with no improvement in the lives of the people and no change in the Republic of Korea?" He continued, "Given that it has been empirically confirmed that unification cannot bring about a better situation for the people and the Republic of Korea, proceeding with unification would ultimately be a betrayal of the people," emphasizing his point.
