[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, pledged on the 2nd to expand the policy supporting menstrual products for female adolescents, currently implemented in Gyeonggi Province, nationwide.

On the same day, Lee stated through social media (SNS), "When I was mayor of Seongnam, I was deeply moved by a heartbreaking story of someone who had no money to buy sanitary pads and had to use crumpled newspapers or tissue paper, even shoe insoles," expressing his commitment.

He then introduced the menstrual product support projects for adolescents that he promoted during his tenure as mayor of Seongnam and governor of Gyeonggi Province.

He said, "Based on the administrative experience from Seongnam and Gyeonggi Province, I promise to expand the 'universal support for menstrual products for female adolescents' policy nationwide," adding, "The state has an obligation to guarantee the health rights of its citizens, and health rights are fundamental rights that must be protected regardless of where one lives or the family into which one is born."

He emphasized, "We will ensure that our adolescents do not suffer by having to substitute menstrual products with unhygienic insoles or tissue paper."
