[Asia Economy Reporter Seoyoung Kwon] Dr. An Seolhee, daughter of Ahn Cheolsoo, the presidential candidate of the People’s Party, reflected on her school days and confessed the teachings she received from her parents.

On the 29th of last month, a video titled "Scientist An Seolhee’s Study Habits, An Seolhee Vlog" was uploaded on Ahn’s YouTube channel. Recently, Dr. An has been regularly appearing alone on YouTube videos without her father, sharing updates about herself and continuing communication with supporters.

Dr. An said, "I read the comments and many people were curious about how I became good at studying," adding, "There are many people who study much better than I do, and there is no special secret," and "I want to talk about how I grew up and how I came this far as a scientist."

She recalled, "When I was young, I didn’t study much and played a lot," and "In elementary school, my dream was either to be a painter or a cartoonist." She continued, "In middle school, my mother went to law school at Washington State University in the U.S., so we moved to Seattle in the summer of 2002." She added, "In high school, I started to become interested in the profession of a doctor," and "I studied biochemistry thinking a lot about how rewarding life would be helping people directly every day."

Dr. An also said, "Even though I majored in biochemistry, I had to take a lot of physics and math classes," and "I ended up loving math very much while taking it reluctantly." She reflected, "I wasn’t good at studying or fond of chemistry from the start; it was a process," and "My dreams changed a lot," explaining how she chose the path of a researcher.

Dr. An shared three teachings from candidate Ahn and his spouse, Professor Kim Mikyung. She said, "I was taught that it is very important for a person to be virtuous," and "Secondly, especially in our family, since we have received a lot from society, we must contribute back to society accordingly." Additionally, she confessed, "Thirdly, they often told me to do my best in my field and become a necessary person among the best."

Meanwhile, Dr. An is currently working as a researcher after completing her doctoral coursework at the University of California, San Diego. Last month, her research team’s study on the transmissibility of the COVID-19 Omicron variant was featured in The New York Times (NYT), drawing attention.
