Utilizing Overseas Bases in Hong Kong and Tokyo
Establishing an Uninterrupted International Broadcasting Network
KT Seoul International Telecommunication Center employees are conducting a pre-quality test of the international broadcasting network for the Winter Olympics.
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-sun] KT announced on the 2nd that it has completed the establishment of an international broadcasting relay network between Korea and Beijing for the live coverage of the '2022 Beijing Winter Olympics (hereinafter Winter Olympics)' held in Beijing, China, starting from the 4th.
KT was solely selected as the main telecommunications company for the international broadcasting relay network to transmit the Winter Olympics live to Korea. The game footage taken on-site is transmitted to Korea via KT's international broadcasting telecommunications network and Asian submarine cables such as APG, KJCN, and APCN2, which are monitored and operated at the Busan International Telecommunications Center. The KT Seoul International Telecommunications Center located in Hyehwa provides this to the three terrestrial broadcasters.
To ensure smooth broadcast relay, KT has triple-redundantly configured the entire section of the international submarine cable between the Beijing International Broadcasting Center (IBC) and the three Korean terrestrial broadcasters as a main route and two backup routes. By utilizing overseas point-of-presence (POP) facilities operating in Hong Kong and Tokyo, immediate rerouting to backup routes is possible even if a failure occurs on the main route.
In particular, KT applied the 'Hitless' function to the broadcasting relay system, including ultra-high-definition (UHD) high-quality broadcasts. Hitless is a technology that enhances the stability of broadcast relay by multiplexing network routes.
During the Winter Olympics, KT will operate a comprehensive control room and enter an emergency duty system. It will also support international calls and international internet for broadcasting officials, press corps, and Olympic officials dispatched on-site. Furthermore, KT has completed thorough pre-service quality testing and emergency recovery drills to prepare for any possible emergency situations.
