[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Seongap) will support emergency medical expenses for low-income children with disabilities in welfare gap groups starting this year.

The district plans to assist children with disabilities who do not qualify for existing emergency welfare medical expense payments by providing emergency medical expense support to help low-income families financially.

The recipients are registered children with disabilities under 18 years old living in households with a standard median income of 120% or less registered in the district. They can apply for up to 300,000 KRW per person annually without limit on the number of times for the out-of-pocket emergency room fees incurred due to emergency treatment.

After emergency room treatment, applicants must prepare the application form, emergency room medical expense receipt, and insurance premium payment certificate, and visit the local community service center or the district office’s Welfare Policy Division to apply.

This emergency medical expense support utilizes the “Hope Ondol Warm Winter Fund,” which helps vulnerable groups in the community through residents’ donations.

In addition, the district is promoting various projects to support the welfare and healthy upbringing of people with disabilities.

First, the “Disability Family Childcare Support Fund” project started in March last year for children with disabilities. The childcare support fund provides 100,000 KRW monthly for up to 84 months regardless of household income or assets to families raising children under 7 years old until the month before the child turns 7.

Also, the district is running the “Assistive Device Rental Service for People with Disabilities” project to provide assistive devices suitable for the growth stages of children and youth with physical and brain lesions disabilities under 24 years old to support proper physical development.

On January 25, the district operated a “Visiting Vaccination Center for People with Developmental Disabilities” to protect those who have difficulty following quarantine rules and are at high risk of infection. In August last year, the district provided great support by offering accompaniment services when visiting vaccination centers, adverse reaction monitoring, and call taxi support services for disabled residents’ vaccination convenience.

District Mayor Kim Seongap said, “The district is promoting various projects to be a reliable supporter for disabled residents,” and added, “We will continue to strive to build a detailed welfare system so that no residents are left behind.”
