"COVID-19 Virus Continues to Evolve"
Calls for All Preventive Measures to Stop the Spread of COVID-19
[Asia Economy International Department Reporter] The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that declaring victory over COVID-19 or giving up efforts to prevent its spread is premature.
On the 1st (local time), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, said in a virtual press briefing, "I am concerned about the widespread narrative in some countries that it is no longer possible or necessary to prevent transmission due to vaccines and the milder symptoms of the Omicron variant."
He emphasized, "More COVID-19 transmission means more deaths," and added, "This virus is dangerous and continues to evolve." He pointed out that approximately 90 million COVID-19 infection cases have been reported to WHO since the Omicron variant was first identified in southern Africa about 10 weeks ago, which is more than the total number of cases in 2020. He again urged countries to implement all preventive measures, including vaccination, to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Additionally, he requested continued monitoring of new variants, including the so-called 'Stealth Omicron,' a subvariant of Omicron.
