Lee Jae-myung on the Rise, Yoon Seok-yeol Declining
Ahn Cheol-soo 10.6%, Sim Sang-jung 3.0%, Kim Dong-yeon 0.8%
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] A public opinion poll conducted ahead of the Lunar New Year showed that Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party of Korea's presidential candidate, and Yoon Seok-youl, the People Power Party's presidential candidate, are in a close race within the margin of error. Lee's support rate showed an upward trend, while Yoon and Ahn Cheol-soo, the People's Party presidential candidate, saw a decline in their support rates.
According to a public opinion poll conducted by TBS Broadcasting, commissioned to the Korea Society Opinion Institute (KSOI), targeting 1,000 men and women nationwide aged 18 and over over two days from the 28th to 29th (wireless ARS automated response, with a sampling error of ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level), Yoon's support rate dropped by 2.2 percentage points from the previous survey (conducted on the 21st-22nd) to 41.6%, while Lee's rose by 4.1 percentage points to 37.9%. The gap between the two candidates' support rates was 3.7 percentage points, within the margin of error. Ahn's support rate fell by 1.0 percentage point to 10.6%. Sim Sang-jung, the Justice Party presidential candidate, had 3.0%, and Kim Dong-yeon, the New Wave presidential candidate, had 0.8%.
Regarding the question about the likelihood of winning the next presidential election, Yoon was at 47.3%, Lee at 43.3%, Ahn at 4.8%, Sim at 1.1%, and Kim at 0.3%.
What draws attention is that in response to the question about whether respondents would continue to support their current preferred candidate until the election day, 84.8% answered that they would 'continue to support.' This is an increase of 6.8% compared to the previous survey. Conversely, the response 'might change' was 13.6%, down by 5.5 percentage points. As the presidential election approaches, the tendency to solidify support for preferred candidates has become increasingly steep, with a decreasing intention to switch candidates.
Regarding the question about which candidate would best implement policies and pledges, Lee received 41.4%, Yoon 37.6%, Ahn 12.6%, Sim 3.1%, and Kim 0.5%.
