[Asia Economy Reporter Sumi Hwang] Historical figures, previously seen only as works of art, have become a hot topic after being realized as lifelike images through artificial intelligence (AI).

Content creator Hidreli Diao shared photos on their SNS that depict historical figures such as Mona Lisa, Vincent van Gogh, and Mozart as real people of the present day.

The Mona Lisa was rendered as a woman in her 30s to 40s with long hair. Wearing a scarf around her neck and a green knit sweater, she appears like a real person living in modern times. Notably, the blurred eyebrows, a distinctive feature of the Mona Lisa painting, were realistically portrayed.

The painter Vincent van Gogh, known only through his self-portraits, was reborn with an actual face. Features from the painting such as blonde hair, a beard, and green eyes were faithfully recreated.

Alexander the Great, known through sculptures, was reproduced as a man in his 20s. Marie Antoinette was depicted with the white skin and blue eyes as shown in the paintings.

Additionally, Mozart, William Shakespeare, and others were also reborn as people of the present day.

Hidreli Diao explained that AI programs Artbreeder and FaceApp were used for this lifelike rendering project.

Artbreeder is a deep learning-based program that creates images of faces, landscapes, and more by learning from diverse data. It is based on Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) technology, which automatically generates images that closely resemble reality by comparing various data such as images and sounds.

FaceApp is an app that edits faces using deepfake technology. Deepfake is a technique that uses deep learning, a branch of AI, to synthesize human faces or specific parts to create fake composites.

Previously, Japanese YouTuber Osushi gained attention for a video that used Artbreeder to render characters from the manga "Crayon Shin-chan" as real people.
