[Asia Economy Reporter Seoyoung Kwon] Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, commented on a post introducing Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate's pledge to introduce 5G public Wi-Fi on subways and buses nationwide.

On the 29th, Lee Jae-myung announced in his 56th 'Sohwakhaeng' (small but certain happiness) pledge on Facebook that by 2023, he would expand the installation of 5G public Wi-Fi on about 30,000 city buses nationwide, as well as various village buses, metropolitan buses, and intercity express buses.

Along with this, Lee posted an image containing the phrase "It works everywhere. 5G Wi-Fi on all buses and subways." However, 10 hours later, Lee Jun-seok drew attention by commenting on this post, "But if jeon-wolse (monthly rent) prices skyrocket and you get 5G Wi-Fi, is that really a benefit?"

Earlier, the Democratic Party's election committee explained this pledge as "a comprehensive improvement of the quality of public Wi-Fi, which experiences speed drops and disconnections due to environmental changes such as the concentration of users during commuting hours." The current subway Wi-Fi speed (62 Mbps) is only about 15% of the average speed of telecom companies, leading to complaints about poor quality despite frequent use.

In response, Lee Jae-myung announced plans to expand the subway '5G backhaul'?a transmission network that connects the upper backbone network with the lower network around mobile communication base stations to improve Wi-Fi speed?previously piloted in some sections, to include the airport railroad and metropolitan subways overall, and to improve data disconnection issues caused by Wi-Fi interference.
