Local meteorological authorities warned that a "whiteout" phenomenon, where surroundings turn completely white causing loss of directional sense, could occur in the Boston area. Heavy snowfall also fell in Long Island, New York, and Bayville, New Jersey, accumulating about 50 cm of snow.
Authorities advised residents to refrain from traveling and to stay indoors.
