[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Lee Junhyung] The Ministry of Employment and Labor has launched an investigation into SAMPYO Industry for alleged violations of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.
On the 29th, the Ministry of Employment and Labor announced that it has begun an investigation into the landslide accident at the SAMPYO Industry stone quarry in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, on suspicion of violating the Serious Accidents Punishment Act. At around 10:08 a.m. that day, a landslide occurred at the SAMPYO Industry Yangju business site, burying three workers. Of the three buried workers, two were found dead. Previously, fatal accidents involving workers had occurred consecutively last year at SAMPYO Industry's Pocheon business site and Seongsu factory.
Minister of Employment and Labor Ahn Kyung-duk said, "It is devastating that a major human casualty accident has occurred again at a company where two industrial accident deaths occurred last year," adding, "We will thoroughly hold those responsible accountable through a swift investigation into the accident, focusing on the obligation of management under the Serious Accidents Punishment Act to establish a safety and health management system and formulate recurrence prevention measures."

SAMPYO Industry operates in the ready-mixed concrete manufacturing sector and employs approximately 930 workers. As the number of regular employees exceeds 50, it is a workplace subject to the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, which came into effect on the 27th of this month. This is why the Ministry of Employment and Labor views this accident as likely to be the 'first case' to which the Serious Accidents Punishment Act will be applied.
Currently, all work at the accident site has been completely suspended. The Ministry of Employment and Labor has also instructed employers at other sites conducting similar work to voluntarily halt operations. The ministry plans to conduct a special inspection of SAMPYO Industry as well.
