[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] On the morning of the 29th, one of the three workers buried in the collapse accident at the Sampyo Industrial stone quarry in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province was found.
A fire rescue official held a briefing at the accident site in the afternoon and stated, "A 28-year-old worker who was operating a drilling machine was found and is currently being rescued, but unfortunately, it is presumed that he has died."
The rescue team said, "It will take about an hour to rescue and recover the man," and added, "Search operations to find the remaining two are also ongoing."
Currently, one 119 rescue dog, about 50 personnel, and approximately 20 pieces of equipment have been deployed at the collapse site.
The volume of soil at the stone quarry collapse site is reported to be about 300,000㎤ (estimated height about 20m), making the rescue operation difficult.
Earlier that morning around 10 a.m., at the Sampyo Industrial stone quarry in Eunhyeon-myeon, Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, three workers were buried 20 meters underground when a pile of soil collapsed during drilling work for blasting to extract aggregate.
Sampyo Industrial, which mainly operates ready-mix concrete factories and aggregate extraction, has quarry sites for aggregate extraction in Yangju, Paju, Hwaseong, and other areas in Gyeonggi Province.
